The Twelfth Doctor is…. Peter Capaldi! The guy they were saying it was going to be! Yay!

This doesn’t have a heck of a lot to do with movies, but I’m a little annoyed that they went with another white dude as the Doctor. I’m sure that Capaldi will do a good job, and I’m intrigued to see what an older actor can bring to the role, but it really seems like a wasted opportunity. When Time Lords regenerate, they can come back in any form. The Twelfth Doctor could have been any conceivable ethnicity and either gender (or even another alien race), but again he’s landed on the white/male combo. Is it meant as a statement? There’s some precedent that Time Lords can choose the form of their next regeneration, and if that’s the case, why does the Doctor keep picking such similar forms? Convenience?

If the regeneration is random, and the Doctor can’t choose the next form (there’s also some precedent for that), then what are the odds that the roulette ball would keep stopping on the same spot?

The reasons exist outside the world of the show. The fact is, he keeps coming back as a white male because to do otherwise would upset certain segments of the show’s demographic. There are folks out there who would be unwilling to accept a female Doctor or a Doctor who was anything but white, so the BBC and/or Moffat played it safe.

I’m annoyed. I’ll feel better when “The World’s End” comes out.
