“Conan the Barbarian” is a flawed, but immensely watchable flick. Despite the fact that our protagonist has biceps the size of swordfish, the movie does a good job of setting him up as an underdog. He’s got the standard “father gets murdered by the bad guy”, but then we get to see him spend his subsequent childhood and young adult working a donkey wheel. Rough times.

I’m a big fan of the setting, as well.  Hyboria is the Dark Ages played on Hard difficulty. You’ve got the usual low standard of living, but they also heap on evil spirits and a ever-growing snake cult. If you haven’t seen it, check it out. The camel punching scene (spoiler!) alone is worth the price of admission.

Jason Mamoa, of “Game of Thrones” fame, will be playing the Cimmerian in the new flick, with Ron Perlman as his dad, so I’ll definitely be lining up for that one. I kind of wished that Mamoa had been dubbed by Arnie, though.  Maybe that’ll be the super-expensive Ultimate BluRay version.
