LIKE my comic if you enjoy a good Imaginary Story

There are rumours swirling about that Jimmy Olsen is going to be a woman in Zach Snyder’s “Man of Steel”. The evidence is pretty sparse, just a brief clip from the trailer and WB’s lack of comment. But the Internet reaction has been predictably negative. I’m in favour of race and colour-blind casting in general, but comic adaptations could really benefit from it. The Big Two comic publishers benefit from oodles and oodles of characters with decades of established history, but most of ’em are white males. Even most of the dang ALIENS are white males. When adapting superheroes and their supporting casts, why not use the opportunity to introduce a bit of diversity? The project has already taken a step or two in that direction. For example, Lawrence Fishburne has been cast as Perry White, the Daily Planet’s editor-in-chief, a character typically depicted as Caucasian.

Going forward, I’d like to see similar steps being taken, and not necessarily limited to the supporting cast.

What’s the Joke, Projectionist? The reverence held for Jimmy Olsen is unusual considering his bizarre history.
