So, I saw “The Hunger Games”. I thought it had a lot going for it. The acting, in general, was great. I loved the badassery of Jennifer Lawrence, the odd, drunken inflections of Woody Harrelson, the many wigs of Elizabeth Banks and the awesome power of Stanley Tucci’s infectious grin. Donald Sutherland didn’t really make an impression as President Snow, and Wes Bentley’s beard upstaged him in every scene. I was also glad to see Toby Jones, but he wasn’t really given much of a chance to shine. As suggested in today’s comic, I found the shaky cam business extremely distracting. I appreciate that it helped to conceal some of the more violent acts in the movie, but it soured the whole experience for me. I still recommend the movie, but Gary “Seabiscuit” Ross made a poor choice with the camera technique.
“The Cabin in the Woods”, on the other hand, I recommend wholeheartedly, 100%. As many of the reviews have already mentioned, you should do your best to avoid spoilers and just see the darned thing. It has some heavy competition in the box office, so I urge you to see it in theatres before it’s gone.
